Productivity Convergence in OECD Manufacturing Industries

چکیده

The extent of band s-convergence of average labor productivity across manufacturing industries in 18 OECD countries over the period 1972–1992 shows large inter-industry differences. One reason for these differences is knowledge and capital barriers preventing the occurrence of catch-up. We find the level of average labor productivity, as a proxy for these barriers, is correlated with the extent of convergence.  2000 Elsevier Science S.A. All rights reserved.

Market Structure, Technology Spillovers, and Persistence in Productivity Differentials

Using data from 11 manufacturing industries in 17 OECD countries, this paper empirically investigates the determinants of cross-country differences in the persistence of productivity differentials. Specifically, the paper focuses on the effects of product market structure and technology diffusion. It is found that the manufacturing industries display a wide range of convergence rates. Consisten...

Productivity across Industries and Countries: Time Series Theory and Evidence

In this paper, we test whether aggregate productivity movements, especially convergence, are also reflected at the industry level. Using a new result on the asymptotic normality of panel unit root estimators, we find evidence for convergence in total factor productivity for sectors such as services and construction in 14 OECD countries from 1970-1987. However, surprisingly, we find that converg...

OECD Convergence: A Sectoral Decomposition Exercise

This paper decomposes OECD convergence into contributions from sectoral productivity growth and contributions from employment shift across sectors. While productivity growth in services and agriculture contributed significantly to convergence, the contributions from employment shift and productivity growth in manufacturing are statistically insignificant. Productivity Change in the Telecommunications Industries of 13 OECD Countries

This paper focuses on the evolution of productivity in the telecommunications industries for 13 OECD countries over the period 1979-1998. It uses Data Envelopment Analysis, a non-parametric approach that allows decompositions of changes in productivity into variations in efficiency and technical change. Moreover, it tests the existence of convergence in labor and total factor productivity level...
